On 21 May 2025 Sunset Lodge & Safaris we joined our guests Lucy & Toni from the UK and Tristan & Kathrine from Germany for an unforgettable safari day in the Kruger National Park.

The Day Begins!
From the start the day began with the most awesome sunrise. Our first sighting was a Hyena which was wonderful as you can often do a Full Day Kruger Safari without spotting Hyena through the entire day. In the end we had several Hyena sightings including 4 cubs at their den waiting for mom to return. The beauty of the new day was further accentuated by the light on the herd of Impalas which we came across next. Impalas are a given as there are so many of in the Kruger.

The day was also unusual because of the large number of male Ostriches we saw, without seeing a single female. The beauty of a male Ostrich cannot be ignored, especially if they are standing all alone.

Elephants can be spotted in large numbers these days in the Kruger National Park. Close up Elephant sightings are not rare anymore, what is important is the way the Trained Guide will handle the situation. As we know, and always or try to inform our visitors, is not to force your way onto the Elephant but to allow them to approach you while you remain calm. Elephant behaviour is often changed by the human behaviour and disrespect shown to them by impatient drivers can lead to fatalities or bad experiences for the guests. It is important to keep in mind that you have now entered their territory and therefore respect and patience will keep you safe.

This time of the year we are permanently on the lookout for Golden Orb Spider Webs, reflecting the sun so beautifully. It is also a treat to be able to photograph them from the vehicle. In the same way one must be on the lookout for Mongoose coming out to warm in the sun. These little creatures is what gives the Savannah life not only the large and easy to spot animals. Have a look at the photo of the Mongoose Family on the Termite mound, too cute!!

Next, we were treated to a Tower of Giraffe with a Baby Giraffe drinking from its mom, what a special sighting! So, the day continued with one special sighting after another, including a herd of Buffalo.

It was difficult to choose a favourite sighting for the day as we came across 2 Lionesses with 5 cubs. Following them in the long grass to where they wanted to drink water. The lionesses leads the cubs back across the road right in front of us, bucket list moment! As we were making our way back to Orpen Gate we came across another very special sighting….a Female Cheetah with her 4 cubs eating an Impala!! Special is not really a strong enough word to describe a sighting of this nature. In the many times I have been in the Park this was an absolute first. The pictures tell a better story than what I ever can! This also rounded up a very fulfilling day on safari!
